A guide to referring vulnerable adults for specialist cleaning

By the Bubble Fresh team 3 min read

You already know the property needs help. The question is who to trust with it.

You have visited the property. You have written it up. You have added it to a caseload that was already too full three months ago. And now you need someone who can go in there and do the work — without making things worse for the person living in it.

That concern — will the contractor understand the person, not only the property? — is one we hear from professionals every week. It is the right question to ask.

A referral can start with a phone call

If you work in social care, housing, environmental health, mental health, or safeguarding, you can refer directly to us. Occupational therapists and tenancy support workers do the same. There is no lengthy form to fill in. A phone call or a short message with the key details is enough to get things moving.

What we need to know is straightforward: the nature of the concern, whether the person knows someone is being asked to help, and any access or safety considerations. Tell us how you would like updates, and we will keep you informed throughout.

What helps us help your client

The referrals that go well are the ones where someone has taken two minutes to tell us about the person, not the property. A name. A bit of background. Whether they are anxious about strangers or whether they have been waiting for someone to come. That context changes how we approach the first visit, and it often makes the difference between someone opening the door and someone not answering it.

When we know the person has been told we are coming — and that we have been described as people who are there to help rather than to judge — the first visit goes more smoothly for everyone. If the person is not yet aware, that is fine too. We can talk through how to introduce the idea.

What happens after you refer

We arrange an assessment visit, usually within a few days. For urgent safeguarding referrals, we respond within four hours. We attend the property, meet the individual where appropriate, and give you a clear picture of what is involved.

From there, we carry out the work and send you full documentation — waste transfer notes, a completion report, and a job summary you can drop straight into your case file. Over ninety percent of our council referrals are completed within the agreed timeline.

That documentation matters. We know it is not paperwork for the sake of it. It is evidence you can point to when you need to show that the right support was put in place.

The bit most contractors get wrong

Specialist cleaning for a vulnerable adult is not the same as clearing an empty property. The person is usually still living there. They may be frightened, or ashamed, or both. They may have had a previous experience with a contractor who turned up, reacted badly, and left them feeling worse than before.

That is why our team is DBS Enhanced checked and safeguarding trained. We arrive in unmarked vehicles. We work at the person's pace. Whether a home needs hoarding support, a deep clean, or help after a bereavement — we treat every situation with the same care. We are approved partners with Northamptonshire Council, Milton Keynes Council, Norfolk County Council, and Norwich City Council, and we understand the standards your teams work to.
